Aries Q1115 Reverb and
Q148++ VCA Conversion

This customer wanted reverb and the features of the Q148. I converted a Synthesizers.com Q115 Reverb and Q148 VCA++ to a single panel Aries format.

I named this the AR-263 since 115+148 = 263. I normalized the reverb output to the VCA input.

Assembly was straightforward. I had to replace several cables for longer reach. I also found a high quality 3.5mm stereo jack for the headphones. The customer will use two power cables for this module.

Operation

The VCA CV jack is attenuated by the VCA Gain control. The jack is normalized to +5V so this operates as a level control with no CV connected. The CV++ jack is added to the CV jack as attenuated by the control. This photo shows the Pan control centered with a 5V triangle CV.

The Pan control can be a bit confusing. CV jack is attenuated by the Pan control. The jack is normalized to 2.5V so in unipolar mode it operates as a pan control. When a CV is inserted the control needs to be set to Right (CW) as any attenuation will result in not being able to pan fully right. This photo shows cross panning with a 5V triangle CV.

When a bipolar CV is inserted the control operates as a normal attenuator. This photo shows cross panning with a +/-5V triangle CV.

The tuning frequency output is controlled by the VCA level. These photos are with the VCA Gain control at maximum, no audio input, and the Pan control centered. The signal level is +/-2V peak-peak.
